When You Can Pay the Reinstatement Fee

Many drivers assume they must wait until the suspension expires to pay, but the Wisconsin Department of Transportation accepts payment as soon as the suspension begins. Paying early does not shorten the suspension period, but it removes one procedural step from the reinstatement checklist.

The suspension notice you received states the suspension start date, the end date, and the specific reason for the suspension.

Paying the fee early removes one procedural step from reinstatement, but it does not shorten the suspension period or restore driving privileges.

Wisconsin Reinstatement Fee

The base reinstatement fee applies to most administrative suspensions.

Wisconsin Department of Transportation, Division of Motor Vehicles

What the Fee Covers and What It Does Not

It does not cover court fines, traffic citations, or insurance compliance requirements. If your suspension was triggered by unpaid fines, you must pay those separately to the court before the DMV will process reinstatement.

Paying the fee does not restore your driving privileges immediately. Your license remains suspended until the full suspension period expires and all other reinstatement requirements are met. For example, if you were suspended for 30 days and you pay the fee on day 10, you still cannot drive until day 31. The fee clears one requirement; it does not override the suspension timeline.

If your suspension was insurance-related, you must also file an SR-22 certificate with the DMV and maintain it for three years. The SR-22 is a separate requirement from the reinstatement fee. If your suspension was OWI-related, you may need proof of an alcohol or drug assessment, completion of a driver safety plan, and ignition interlock device installation before reinstatement is approved.

You cannot drive until the suspension period expires and all other requirements clear.

How to Pay the Reinstatement Fee

Wisconsin accepts reinstatement fee payment online, by mail, or in person at any DMV Customer Service Center. Each method requires your driver license number and the suspension notice reference number.

Online payment is the fastest method. Visit wisconsindmv.gov and navigate to the reinstatement fee payment portal. You will need your Wisconsin driver license number, the suspension notice number, and a debit or credit card. The system processes payment immediately and updates your DMV record within one business day. Print the payment confirmation receipt and keep it until reinstatement is complete.

Mail to Wisconsin Department of Transportation, P.O. Box 7917, Madison, WI 53707-7917. Processing takes 5 to 10 business days from the date the DMV receives your payment. Do not mail cash.

What Happens After You Pay

After the DMV processes your payment, the fee requirement is marked as satisfied on your driving record. You can verify payment status by checking your record online at wisconsindmv.gov or by calling the DMV customer service line. Payment confirmation does not mean reinstatement is complete. You must still wait for the suspension period to expire and satisfy any additional requirements listed on your suspension notice.

If your suspension was multi-tier or involved multiple violations, the DMV may require additional documentation before clearing your record. For example, a suspension triggered by both unpaid fines and lapsed insurance requires proof that the fines are paid and that you have filed an SR-22 certificate. The DMV will not restore your license until every listed requirement is met.

Once the suspension period ends and all requirements are satisfied, your driving privileges restore automatically. Wisconsin does not issue a new physical license card at reinstatement unless your card expired during the suspension. Your existing card becomes valid again. If you applied for an Occupational License during the suspension, that restricted license expires when full privileges restore.

Insurance Requirements at Reinstatement

Wisconsin requires proof of insurance before reinstating a license suspended for insurance-related reasons. If your suspension was triggered by driving without insurance, lapsed coverage, or failure to provide proof of insurance, you must file an SR-22 certificate with the DMV before reinstatement is approved. The SR-22 is a form your insurance carrier files electronically with the state, confirming that you carry at least Wisconsin's minimum liability coverage: $25,000 per person for bodily injury, $50,000 per accident for bodily injury, and $10,000 for property damage.

The SR-22 filing period lasts three years from the reinstatement date. Your carrier must maintain the SR-22 on file with the DMV for the entire period. If your policy lapses or cancels during the three-year period, the carrier notifies the DMV and your license is suspended again. Maintaining continuous coverage is required, not optional. Carriers that write SR-22 policies in Wisconsin include State Farm, Geico, Progressive, Allstate, Dairyland, The General, Bristol West, and GAINSCO.

Compare Carriers Before Reinstatement

If you need SR-22 coverage to meet reinstatement requirements, compare carriers before filing. Not every carrier writes SR-22 policies, and rates vary widely. Carriers that specialize in high-risk or non-standard auto insurance often offer lower premiums for drivers with suspensions or violations than standard carriers do. Request quotes from at least three carriers that confirm they write SR-22 policies in Wisconsin and can file electronically with the DMV.

Once you select a carrier and purchase a policy, the carrier files the SR-22 certificate with the DMV on your behalf. Electronic filing updates the DMV record within one to two business days. Verify that the SR-22 is on file before attempting to reinstate your license. If the DMV does not show the SR-22 filing when you pay the reinstatement fee and the suspension period ends, reinstatement will be delayed until the certificate appears in the system.
